White bridal suits and tuxedos
If you are considering a white pant suit for women, why not up the formality and go for a women’s tuxedo for your wedding? Typically white bridal tuxedos consist of a suit jacket and matching pants with white satin details usually on the lapels, pockets, buttons and down the side seam of the pants. However the pants might also be replaced by a skirt or shorts and adding a vest gives you two to three looks with your suit! Wear the vest on its own with the pants and get the look of a white jumpsuit, but without the annoyance of a wedding jumpsuit! see below example, Hannah just removed the jacket and added the vest for her afterparty!
Turning one suit into two or three looks
The obvious reason to opt for a white bridal tux is because it offers a fresh and stylish alternative to the traditional wedding dress. Some of our recent clients have also chosen a white formal women’s pant suit as a second look for the reception; others have opted to wear it to their engagement parties or rehearsal dinners. That’s one of the amazing things about this look: It’s so versatile.
Why white cloth is difficult to tailor
As I mentioned above, though, working with white is not always easy. The designer/tailor has to know what they are doing to ensure the look doesn’t fall flat, or see through!
For one, you can’t just use any white wool because it can be really see through. Certain white wools drape poorly as well. At Watson Ellis we have curated a selection of white wools that do not present such issues. On a side note, we have also sourced the best white and ivory silk satin duchesse for the contrast fabric (which goes on the lapels, pocket welts and side stripe on the pants).
Most of the transparency problem isn't the cloth, it's what's behind it. Standard canvas is grey or fawn, and under white wool it reads as a shadow across the chest. We canvas white garments in pale/skintone canvas. The lining color is not just a standard white or ivory either, The big secret here is you want to match closer to the skin tone of the wearer, not the outer fabric, especially for someone with darker skin! Talk about a true bespoke wedding suit! ;)
White trousers need more help than the jacket. We fully underline them, which solves the transparency and stops the cloth clinging as you move. Pocket bags are the giveaway. Ordinary cotton drill shows as a rectangle through a white trouser front every time, so we always recommend to eliminate pockets in white pants, they are only problematic! Underlining is the best way we have found to deal with seam allowances and the waistband curtain is also taken care of with our underlining technique. None of this is complicated, but all of it has to be decided before the cloth is cut.
Fitting a white bridal pantsuit
On top of the fabrics we use, we have also developed some tricks in construction that help to limit the opaque nature of white suits. As everyone knows, white garments can be the least forgiving and concealing. No matter the body shape or size, though, if the fit is great, the look can be amazing. We’re experts at fitting plus size women’s bodies and that is especially important when it comes to anything white, and particularly a white women’s wedding suit.
How long a custom bridal suit takes
One last thing to keep in mind if you’re hunting for a white bridal tuxedo or ladies white pant suit is that you should allow at least 6 months for the whole process. Most suits at Watson Ellis take approximately 12 weeks from start to final delivery. But as I’ve mentioned, working with white is inherently a more complicated and involved process. Leaving some extra time will ensure that we get the tuxedo exactly right.
