There are a lot of tuxedo shops in New York City. Custom ones. And then others that offer ready-to-wear tuxedos. But the fact is that most of them offer the same things — slight variations on the old classic black tuxedo; or the white tuxedo smoking jacket with black pants. Fabric and design options are usually very limited — there’s only so much one can do for a traditional tuxedo, right? It’s all pretty predictable.

At Watson Ellis, we’re going far beyond the ordinary options to offer our clients some truly unique design and fabric options when it comes to custom tuxedos. Of course we also do the more traditional styles, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong those — it’s pretty hard to argue with the classic tuxedo; it’s a classic for a very good reason. But we’ve also extended our range to encompass some more exploratory and adventurous options that we think you might be excited about.

What makes a suit or a jacket a "Tux"?

The use of contrast silk satin in various places, most commonly on the lapel, chest pocket and side pockets, with a side seam stripe down the side of the trouser. Lots of companies use polyester satin. At Watson Ellis, we ONLY use SILK Satin.

In addition to the classic black tie tuxedo, we do smoking jackets with jacquard patterns for the body fabric. We’ll also source the PERFECT matching color silk satin to go with ANY color tux you choose. Many suit companies only have a set color palette of black, white, blue. We go far beyond this usual range, and we’ll make sure that the coordinating satin is perfect.

We also offer tuxes with unique piping options, such as this one of our friend and client Garrett here. We can do cut-outs, where part of the lapel or collar is cut out in a specific shape and made from satin, so it doesn't have to be the whole lapel or collar.

The bottom line is that we can really craft a tuxedo to your specific tastes and preferences. Given our handmade manufacturing processes, there are really no limits or restrictions when it comes to the design or fit of a Watson Ellis custom tuxedo.
