Custom fashion is the only sustainable fashion
There are so many reasons we are passionate about custom fashion. Of course, thereβs nothing more special, fashion-wise, than having a piece, or set of pieces, designed especially for you. Itβs the ultimate expression of who you are and what youβre about in clothing terms. Custom pieces, in our experience, tend to have so much more emotional resonance for the purchaser than garments that come straight off the rack. They mean more; we like to assume that many of them will go on to become heirlooms, treasured items in the closet.
Thereβs so much to be said for garments that are not simply available at the click of a mouse. For garments that require thought and patience, rather than happening on a whim. Things that require the kind of care needed to acquire a true custom piece are just innately more valuable to us. But maybe the most important thing about them is their sustainability, particularly when compared with fast fashion.
The environmental footprint of fast fashion is truly staggering.
To throw just a few jaw-dropping stats at you: the global fashion industry (made up by and large by fast fashion) accounts for more than 10% of global pollution. More than 1.2 billion tonnes of carbon emissions are released by the churn of the fashion industry every single year, and this number is only trending upwards. Clothing disposal (in landfills, predominantly) is the fastest growing waste industry on the planet.
Fast fashion and the pollution it creates is quite literally leading the way to global warming and the rapid degradation of the only viable planet we have. Custom fashion, like that which we create at WATSON ELLIS, on the other hand, is sustainable. That means you can feel good in your custom garments not only because you look great, but also because you are quite literally doing a good planetary deed. These garments are singular. There is no inventory waste in the process of making them. The footprint of our factory, which employs a select workforce of highly skilled tailors in excellent conditions, is minimal.
The bottomline here: custom fashion is the only form of sustainable fashion.
Of course we understand that not all of your clothes can be custom, at least not yet. For one, this would be too expensive for most. But do the planet a favor and make the truly special items in your closet custom items, while also looking to minimize waste wherever possible with respect to the rest of your wardrobe.
