Sustainable and Vegan Custom Suits NYC

In the market for a sustainable and-or vegan custom suit in New York? I’d say β€œyou should look no further than Watson Ellis,” but that kind of thing sounds incredibly generic and sell-y. Then again, the truth is you should look no further than Watson Ellis... We offer the best vegan suits fabrics on the market, and you can rest-assured that our practices are sustainable all the way from the first fitting, through manufacturing and the finally delivery phase. I thought I’d bring those of you who are vegan suit enthusiasts a post on what we can do for you, and importantly, on what you should be looking out for in the vegan suit market.

First off, I’d say one of the most critical aspects when it comes to shopping for a vegan suit is to know your fibers, and to expect / understand that these materials will naturally look and drape differently to the usual wools or silks. Vegan suits will never look EXACTLY like, say, a wool suit because different materials drape and act differently when worn.

For example, cotton can appear a little more stiff than wool. That being said, I don’t think it’s any less beautiful. I like to think it has more of an effortless elegance instead of what you might call a super polished finish.

Linen takes this one step further. The texture gives a linen suit a more casual vibe. In buying a linen suit, you should not expect a smooth look all the time. Linen wrinkles, but that’s all part of the beauty! It wrinkles in style.

Another option could be a rayon polyester blend that mimics the drape of a wool quite well, but it will feel more synthetic. That being said, technology has advanced so much in fiber and fabric creation that a synthetic material can be just as fine and expensive as a wool fabric. Just don’t ever iron it on the exterior. Doing so can leave burn marks! A pretty new innovation in vegan material is bamboo, it drapes like cashmere and has a luster like silk. Its great for a more formal vegan wedding.

At Watson Ellis, we take care to ensure the best quality for our vegan clients while still delivering final garments in keeping with their sustainable values. For instance, we only use the highest quality fusables in order to give the suit top-notch inner structure. In other words, it’s almost as if we were making a fully canvassed suit except it’s done using fusable vegan materials. The faux horn buttons we use are just as beautiful as natural horn too, and they come in almost as many different colors and finishes. Our lining is 100% Japanese Bemberg which is the finest and strongest quality rayon around.

Most important of all, our vegan suits are still 100% handmade, constructed by hand, with buttonholes stitched by hand. All just as any high quality custom suit should be.

If you’re interested in browsing or shopping our plethora of vegan fabrics, please don’t hesitate to get in touch and-or book an obligation-free appointment to come see us. We’d love to walk you through our process and discuss how we can meet your custom suiting needs.
